Hollywood's Labor Deadlock May End With Union Dissidents' Win
Unite for Strength, a dissenting party within the Screen Actors Guild (SAG), has successfully obtained control of the local board in Hollywood, winning 6 of the 11 seats representing the area on the national board. The group claimed that current leadership was responsible for the disparate contract negotiations of SAG and the American Federation of Television and Radio Artists (AFTRA) with Studios, allowing the latter to approve a contract on July 8th, which significantly weakened SAG leverage. The drastic change in the 69-member national board could mean an end to an impasse with the Alliance of Motion Picture and Television Producers, who halted formal negotiations with the union after a ?final offer? on June 30th. A union survey suggests that 87% of the membership still wishes to hold out for better terms than AFTRA negotiated.
