Hong Kong?s labor shortage means $140-a-day construction jobs, waiters with benefits
Hong Kong is experiencing a huge labor shortage in blue- and pink-collar jobs because of an aging workforce and a highly educated youth. Average wages in manual labor jobs like construction are shooting well above what is seen in other developed nations like the U.S., Germany, and Australia. Other sectors like services or hospitality are seeing benefits expanded to unprecedented levels, with wait staff being offered medical, dental, and life insurance, use of vacation homes, and education allowances. By the year 2018, it is expected that there will be 14,000 fewer workers than jobs. To fill the gap, the country has already begun importing labor especially in ?domestic? settings and construction.
