Hotel workers in various hotels around the US on strike, demand return of daily room cleanings
Thousands of hotel workers around the country participated in a one-day strike on Sunday. Workers in Boston, Honolulu, San Diego, San Francisco, San Jose, and Seattle at over twenty hotels were on strike, demanding better working conditions and increased wages. The employees are represented by the UNITE Here union, and workers successfully voted to authorize strike action earlier this month. A major demand that workers are advocating for is the return of daily room cleaning services. During the COVID-19 pandemic, hotels shifted to fewer cleaning services and provided customers with the option to delay cleanings until the end of their stay. Hotels have stated that it is a more environmentally friendly option, but workers counter that this results in greater workloads. Workers claim that the allocated time per room is not long enough for them to complete the more significant workloads.
