House Republicans strike bill language to force postal unions to open contracts
With Congress? annual August recess approaching, lawmakers in the House Committee on Oversight and Government Reform are trying to put together a bill that would restructure the Postal Service?s bleeding assets. Champion of the bill Darrell Issa (R-Calif.) said Wednesday that he will strike language to force unions to open existing contracts and eliminate no-layoff rules; a change that will surely sweeten the proposal for House Democrats and the union lobby. Yet disagreement over whether to eliminate Saturday deliveries have belabored negotiations, with $2 billion a year in savings being weighed against the potential loss of jobs.
