How Much More Can the Labor Force Grow?
In February, 555,000 people joined the U.S. Labor force, bringing the number to 1.52 million new jobs in the last 3 month, the largest such number in 16 years. Despite the rise in jobs, average hourly earnings fell slightly. The biggest question in the labor market for the rest of 2016 is how the wage rate and job creation rate will interplay. If job growth continues at its current high rate, this could keep a downward pressure on wages. However, it is also possible that increasing wages may be necessary to pull people into the job market and keep the level of growth going.
