How Sunday stopped being special for the American worker
Walmart is giving employees who’ve been with the company for five years or more a one-time increase in their paychecks as it prepares to discontinue Sunday premium pay. The company had already discontinued Sunday premium pay for new hires in 2011; the latest announcement brings Walmart in line with most of the retail industry as most states have discontinued legal requirements to pay workers more on Sundays. Only two states remain that legislate time and a half on Sundays: Rhode Island and Massachusetts. Other industries that continue to offer extra pay are manufacturing and transportation; most federal employees also receive premium pay on Sundays.
