How this garlic farm went from a labor shortage to over 150 people on its applicant waitlist
Christopher Ranch in California responded to the recent dearth of agricultural labor in the nation by raising wages to a starting rate of $13 an hour to be increased to $15 by 2018. The action was successful, and the company now has a waitlist 150 workers long. Farms across the nation are struggling to find farmhands, probably due to the decline in Mexican farm-laborers since 1980. Although legislation has improved conditions for farm-workers in California--they are now entitled to overtime pay after eight hours a day or 40 hours a week--the shortage remains especially problematic because the work does not attract employees in other industries.
