HRW: Artists threaten boycott of Guggenheim in UAE
Over 130 artists and writers have signed a statement saying that they will boycott the branch of the Guggenheim Museum that is being built in Abu Dhabi unless the rights of workers on the site are protected. The statement was released through Human Rights Watch, and asked that workers be reimbursed for recruitment fees and that an independent monitoring system is set up to look at working conditions. The government says that they are in the midst of implementing many of the changes asked for in the statement. A branch of the Louvre and a New York University campus are being built in the same area in Abu Dhabi. In February, NYU announced that it was implementing a code of conduct for workers in Abu Dhabi after concerns about workers' rights were raised.
