Impact of union measure takes hold
Two Wisconsin graduate teaching assistants' unions, the Teaching Assistants Association and the Milwaukee Graduate Assistants Association, say that they will not seek re-certification votes for their unions. Under the law passed by Governor Scott Walker, unions must undergo a re-certification vote every year. To be re-certified, the union must get approval from 51% of all eligible members, meaning that if less than 50% of eligible members vote, the union will not be re-certified. The TAA and the MGAA said that they did not think the vote would be worth it for them. Other provisions of the law, which ended collective bargaining for almost all public employees in Wisconsin, are beginning to go into effect, including higher costs for health insurance and pensions.
