In Canada, newly proposed legislation raises fears of eroding workers' rights
In Ontario, Canada, legislation is being considered that would restrict teachers' ability to strike by fining them thousands of dollars for each strike day. This has been very controversial as labor advocates fear this would set a precedent that would erode workers' rights in Canada. If the bill passes, it will be the first time in Canadian history that workers' right to organize would be formally diminished. However, the bill violates the country's Human Rights Code as well as the Charter of Rights and Freedoms, and, as such, it will be a contentious legal battle whether the bill can legally be passed.
