In France, Labor Strikes Head for Showdown
On the sixth day of national protesting since September, French workers and students protested against pension reform. Garbage workers, teachers, truck drivers and others joined the protests today, with 379 high schools reporting disruptions as well. The protest, combined with the eight-day strike of oil refinery workers, has caused a gas shortage at a third of France's gas stations. President Sarkozy said that he will enact the reforms despite the protests, and that he will also ensure public order. Many see the strikes as a referendum on the President, not just the pension reform. Flights and trains are also being affected by the strikes.
