According to a recent law passed in Seattle, gig workers will be permanently guaranteed paid sick leave and safe time as a continuation of protections that were initiated during the pandemic. This law strengthens gig worker protections and will allow workers to accrue sick time and is the first of its kind in the US. Furthermore, it expands the category of workers covered by the policy to include gig workers who work for all types of service apps, not just ride-share and food delivery ones. Another recent policy passed in Seattle includes a minimum pay and mileage requirement for app drivers, which has been criticized by companies like Instacart.
