India truck strike over fuel cost
Truck drivers in India began an indefinite strike Monday, pulling trucks off of the road. Six million trucks were taken off the road yesterday, after weekend talks with the government broke down. The truck drivers are demanding a lowering of the price of diesel fuel, and protesting the imposition of large government road tolls. The drivers say they have been hit hard by high oil prices and the economic slump. All India Motor Transport Congress president Charan Singh Lohara says the drivers will continue to strike until their demands are met. He says that other industries are receiving concessions and bailouts, and that they, in the midst of dealing with loans, and high oil and tire prices, should be getting help as well. Although the strike is only in its early stages, analysts believe that if it continues, the prices of essential commodities will rise.
