Indian Auto Workers Protest for Rank-and-File Union and Release from Jail
A group of auto workers numbering in the thousands staged a sit-in hunger strike in Manesar, India Thursday, protesting the arrest of 147 Suzuki workers last year. The workers were arrested after organizing tensions led to the death of a human resources manager who supported the union. Protesters have demanded the immediate release of the jailed workers as well as the reinstatement of 2,500 workers that were sacked after they formed the Maruti Suzuki Workers Union. Government officials have barred public assembly in Manesar, though protesters have continued their demonstration.
