Indonesia Workers Demand Higher Pay in May Day March
Workers in Indonesia are among those protesting for higher wages and better working conditions on May Day. The workers say that they are not receiving high enough wages given rising inflation and profits. the government announced that May Day will be an official holiday next year, with many companies already giving workers the day off. Large-scale demonstrations on the day began in 1999, after a change in the Indonesian government.
