Italian Law Pits Older Workers Against Younger Ones
Italian workers are protesting proposed changes to labor laws. The current laws have strong job security for older workers by making it hard for employers to fire workers. Younger workers however are often employed in low-wage, temporary positions with little or no job security. Over 30% of younger Italian workers are currently unemployed. Younger workers say that the government should focus more on the prevalence of temporary positions, and say that the government should not punish workers. The government says that the changes are necessary for the economy.
