The two unions represent about 9,500 of the hospital systems 12,000 employees. The president of SEIU Local 1991, Martha Baker, said that the hospital should explore all other options before laying people off, and that if they cannot collect their bills it will not matter how many people they lay off. She also mentioned the layoff notification period of 21 days that is required by the union's contract, saying that no one in the SEIU can be laid of before March 9. The CEO of Jackson made a statement that had the union agreed to pay cuts for employees making over $50,000 a year the that would have saved $62 million.
