Janitors' strike hits Cambridge
The 10,000 Boston area janitors represented by Local 254 of the Service Employees International Union (SEIU) stepped up pressure on the Maintenance Contractors of New England (MCNE) last night, expanding their strike to Cambridge. Continuing their strategy of using targeted work stoppages in their fight for health insurance, better wages and full-time employment (see WIT?s for Sep. 3 and 17, 2002), Local 254 members are focusing the extension of their job actions on the offices of high-tech firms along Kendal square. With the impact of the two-week old strike a matter of some dispute, the union went to court yesterday in an effort to prevent restrictions on their right to hold rush-hour marches throughout Boston, winning a partial victory in the form of an interim ruling reducing advance notice restrictions on the janitors? rallies.
