Job openings up in July but hiring slips
Survey data from the Labor Department shows that the number of job openings rose in July from 3.17 million to 3.23 million, but hiring fell from 4.06 million to 3.98 million. The survey indicates that employers were not filling job openings quick enough to help lower the unemployment rate, which remained at 9.1% in July. Overall, the economy only added 85,000 jobs. The report also showed that the quit rate and layoff rate remained steady during July.
