Judge Rules That Cayuga Medical Center Violated Labor Laws
Cayuga Medical Center, located in Ithaca, New York, was found to be in violation of the National Labor Relations Act after deterring nurses from forming a union. Cayuga Medical Center’s administration prohibited nurses from circulating union literature and and from requesting information during their off-time. Additionally, a nurse was suspended without pay for being the “ringleader” of the organizing activities. Federal Judge David I. Goldman believes that extreme punishment is unnecessary, and that CMC should sent a letter to all employees explaining their labor rights, as well as ceasing to prevent nurses from organizing.
