Kansas legislative bill increases tax credits to benefit workers with disabilities
A recent bill that has been passed by Kansas state legislative will increase income tax credits for goods that are bought from companies and nonprofit organizations that employ workers with disabilities. The bill raises available tax credits by three million dollars and will develop a new program for nonprofit organizations that hire disabled employees. The new program will help these organizations pay disabled workers the federal minimum wage, and one million dollars has been allocated to the program. The current federal law requires employers to obtain a certificate from the United States Department of Labor to be able to pay disabled workers under the federal minimum wage. The number of companies and nonprofit organizations that have this certificate has significantly decreased over the past decade, and many companies are moving away from the practice. Various states in America have state laws making it illegal to pay disabled workers below the federal minimum wage.
