Kazakhstan Comes Under Fire for Workers’ Rights Crackdown
In a forthcoming report, the ILO called for Kazakhstan to reform its labor laws and lift the ban on financial assistance to trade unions by international organizations. This marks the third year in a row that concerns about the violations of workers’ rights have come to light. Although the ILO mission to Kazakhstan last year characterized the improvement of workers’ rights as encouraging, little real progress has been made since the case was last discussed. While the Kazakh government has considered minor amendments to its labor laws, it has also revoked the registration of the Confederation of Independent Trade Unions of Kazakhstan (KNPRK) and jailed union leaders for political reasons.
