Kellogg initiates lockout at Memphis cereal plant
On Tuesday, Kellogg?s locked out 226 employees represented by the Bakery, Confectionery, Tobacco Workers and Grain Millers International Union (BCTGM) after the union refused to accept the company?s ?last, best, and final? offer, which included a two-tiered wage scale and caps on what new workers can earn. The plant in Memphis, Tennessee had been idle since October 7, but it is not expected to close. Kellogg?s states that its labor costs are above competitors and that its network of plants is producing ?excess capacity?. The company had already laid-off 70 workers in August, but the union fears that there may be a shift toward a more temporary workforce at the plant.
