L.A. County labor union plans protest as contract expires
L.A. municipal county employees, represented by SEIU, plan on going on strike tomorrow after their contract expires today and after not having seen a pay increase in over five years. The county has offered a 6% raise over 30 months, which the union says is still a pay cut after the increases in insurance premiums their members would have faced in the proposed contract. The county says that the union is basing the strike on ?postulating a scenario? and that insurance premiums, pay, and other conditions of work are all ?bargaining chips? which are on the table. The county says that in the event of a strike, contingency plans are in place, but also that it is committed to the bargaining process. Several other unions in the county have agreed to the 6% wage increase.
