L.A. Unified school bus drivers and teacher assistants are planning a daylong strike
The Service Employees International Union Local 99, which represents more than 30,000 employees across LA, has called for a 24-hour strike on May 15. The union and school district have been unable to agree on contract terms after more than a year of bargaining. Executive director Max Arias says that some 125 special education assistants had their hours cut without the Union’s knowledge and that there have been efforts by the administration in at least one school to interfere with the strike vote. More than 94% of the 11,000 school bus drivers, custodians, special education assistants, teacher assistants, health aides and cafeteria workers who voted were in favor of the strike.
