Labor Group Says Haiti?s Factories Are Unsafe
Better Work, a Geneva-based organization with the backing of the International Labor Organization, inspected 23 Haitian factories and found that most of them were legally non-compliant. Some had insufficient lighting, unmarked emergency exits, too few toilets, and no medical facilities nor medical staff. In response to other reports of labor violations, the Haitian Prime Minister wrote that Haiti is ?continuing to build an environment that holds ourselves and employers accountable for safe working conditions, competitive and growing wages, and opportunities for advancement.? These factories have been assessed more than once and only seven have improved their overall ratings.
