Labor leaders back Obama, but will members?
Obama?s final losses in the Democratic party primary pointed to the weak support among the white working class. Now that the primary is won, American labor leaders are urging white working class members to put aside racism and back Obama. Of the AFL-CIO?s 10 million members, approximately a quarter remain unsure about Obama and the union?s leaders are pulling out all the stops in an effort to influence their members? votes. ?There?s not a single good reason for any worker ? especially any union member ? to vote against Barack Obama,? says labor leader Richard Trumka. Union members are expected to cast one in every four votes in November, and more even in several key states.
