Labor of love: Israelis get organized, flock to union in record numbers
Organized labor is trending in Israel. Since 2011, over 45,000 workers have organized in locals or branches, according to union figures. The movement seems to be accelerating, as 60 percent more workers have organized in the first five months of 2013 alone than in all of 2012. In the past week, workers from three major companies including McDonald?s joined unions or began the organizing process. A combination of pro-labor laws, social protests, economic uncertainty, and new labor organizations are thought to be the contributing factors behind the spike in membership.
