Labor Ruling on McDonald?s Has Business Worried
Tuesday's ruling by the NLRB that McDonald's can be held jointly liable for conditions at its franchises has business leaders in other industries concerned about the decision's implications for them. Groups across numerous industries have immediately made clear their intention to have the decision overturned by the federal courts, claiming that McDonald's should not be held liable since the corporation does not set hours or wages for workers at its franchises. They also predict that increased labor costs in other franchise industries such as health care and hospitality could damage those individual franchises' effectiveness and service, even cause some to go out of business. Labor groups, however, hope the decision will force corporations to focus more on working conditions at their franchises.
