Labor Woos Whites for Obama
The AFL-CIO crafted "Working America" is leading efforts to sway white, working-class voters towards Democratic Presidential candidate Barack Obama. While the group has no involvement in contract negotiations or other specifically union related activities, it does sign up about 50,000 people a week and maintain a staff of 450 individuals in order to encourage workers to consider economic issues more heavily than cultural ones. Working America is just one of several tactics being used by organized labor to support the election of a democratic President this November in hopes of boosting union participation and organizing power, among other things. This year's election results could be a determining factor in proposed legislation such as the Employee Free Choice Act and labor is spending more money than ever to support Democratic candidates. Some of the funding is even going towards new technology, allowing volunteers to quickly and efficiently reach more voters in their campaigning efforts.
