LAX workers go on strike, threatening Labor Day weekend travel
Members of the Service Employees International Union Local 1877 cast aside baggage carts in favor of picket signs at noon yesterday, marking the beginning of a strike that is expected to increase in size over the weekend. The strike affects several large terminals serving American, United, Southwest and Northwest Airlines, though an airline spokeswoman has said that they are not yet worried ? ?many workers have not joined the strikes, and everything is going fine,? though they did suggest that Labor Day travelers be sure to show up two or three hours early. Local 1877 and the contractors who pay them have been in negotiations since July, with union members pushing for health insurance and a 50 cent pay increase.
