Agreements have been reached between several of the airline contractors and 1,900 of the striking LAX workers, mainly baggage handlers, wheelchair attendants, security personnel and cabin cleaners. 600 workers, primarily janitors, and several more of the contractors have yet to reach agreements, but the airline is confident that terms will be hashed out by the end of the week. The workers, members of Airport Workers United, SEIU Local 1877, were seeking better wages, training practices, health care and staff support. Union spokesman Mike Chavez said that significant improvements were made to wages, training and equipment, but ?the one thing that really is not in there is health care benefits.? 97% of the workers currently operate without health care.
