Layoffs mount, but media sector hardly worst off
In more recent news about layoffs, Sony is likely to eliminate 300 jobs. However, such numbers are dwarfed by the layoffs in non-media industries. In the first two months of 2009 alone, 7,453 jobs have been lost in media businesses; but retail jobs have been reduced by 72,727, and automotive jobs by 70,058. In fact, 14 industries eliminated more jobs than the media industry. Media companies cut 28,083 jobs in 2008, though only 5,544 of those were cut in the first two months. Sony has not commented on the new purported layoff plans, but it is speculated that inadequate DVD sales are at fault.
