Legal repercussions for companies restricting Black Lives Matter masks for employees
As masks for employees across the country continue to be mandatory, companies are struggling with the issue of whether or not workers should be permitted to wear Black Lives Matter masks while working. According to Wendy Greene, a law professor at Drexel University specializing in workplace discrimination, while employers are generally given "considerable latitude in regulating an employee's dress while working", companies could face ramifications for restricting workers' attire with regard to Black Lives Matter merchandise. Greene states that companies need to apply their respective policies evenly for all workers. Thus, if a company restricts Black Lives Matter gear but not other social justice attire, those employers may face liability for discrimination. In addition, Greene says, companies should consider not just their legal rights, but damage to their reputations and negative impact upon workers.
