Lingering issues for Philadelphia-area hospitality workers after breakup of merged Unite Here union
Arbitration between Unite Here and Workers United in Philadelphia has finally been settled, with workers now knowing which union they are represented by. Unite and Here combined to form Unite Here in 2004, but the former Unite leadership broke away to form Workers United in 2009. The battle for control of workers and assets of the two unions left Philadelphia workers, employers and contracts in limbo as all sides tried to figure out which union they were represented by. While other cities had a clear grasp of which workers went where, Philadelphia was not as clear. The arbitration was completed in September, and went into effect on October 1st.
