Lonmin Backs Down on Threat to Dismiss Strikers After Deaths
The South African platinum mine that was hit by violence last week during a strike in which 34 workers were killed by police says that they will not be firing workers who do not return to work today. The company said that they agreed with the government that an ultimatum was not the right decision. The South African government announced a national week of mourning August 17. About a third of the mine's 28,000 workers returned to work on Tuesday, more than the day before but still far less than is necessary for the mine to return to normal operations. Around 3,000 workers went on strike on August 10 for higher wages.
