Lonmin deal stirs more South Africa mine strife
Striking South African miners at the Marikana mine agreed to raises of 11-22%, ending a strike that had stretched for weeks and led to violence. Workers called the settlement a victory. The strike at Marikana had spread to other mines, who are now looking to receive their own wage increases. At one mine, police fired tear gas into a crowd, pulling up memories of the clash that left over 30 miners dead in August. The companies say that they cannot afford to pay their workers more, but with the Marikana settlement, experts say that it will set a precedent for other mines.
