Losing Vote at a Target in New York, Union Vows to Try Again
The United Food and Commercial Workers are charging retail giant Target with illegal practices after a unionization vote at a store in Valley Stream, NY was soundly defeated. UFCW leaders claim that workers at the store were subjected to intimidation and threats by Target officials in the days and weeks leading up to the vote, and are demanding a new election. Target representatives have denied the allegations, claiming that the store has worked hard foster "a culture where our team members don?t want or need union representation". The UFCW hoped the store would be the first to unionize among Target stores nationwide, and would create momentum for more unionization votes across the country.
