Low Pay May Further Hurt Police Recruiting, Officials Warn
The chief of personnel for New York City?s Police Department warned yesterday that there might be even fewer recruits for the Police Academy class in January than there are for this summer?s already diminished class because of the low starting pay. The difficulty in recruiting is reflected in the department?s own estimate that fewer than 800 people will be enrolled in the next training session at the academy ? the required first step to becoming a police officer ? which begins July 8. In an interview yesterday, Chief Pineiro said the enrollment would be about one-third of the 2,400 recruits he had hoped to attract.
