Machinists union opens North Charleston office to try to organize Boeing plant
In an effort to organize Boeing employees in South Carolina, the International Association of Machinists and Aerospace Workers will hold its first meeting in its new office in North Charleston on Thursday. IAM spokesperson Frank Larkin says that the office ?maintains contact with several hundred? of the 7,000 employee facility that assembles large portions of the 787 Dreamliner. Just weeks ago, the governor of South Carolina expressed firmly and clearly her intentions to repel unions from organizing workers the state. Recently, Boeing has been increasing its footprint in South Carolina, which spurred the union to ramp up its efforts at the plant. Boeing remains firmly opposed to the union?s presence in the facility and believes that their ?teammates? in South Carolina are better served without an outside organization?s input.
