Macron Faces First Big Street Protests, a Challenge to His Labor Reforms
French Prime Minister Emmanuel Macron faced a huge backlash against his overhaul of the labor code as somewhere between 24,000 and 60,000 protesters took to the streets in a dozen cities in France this week. Violence erupted sporadically between a few protesters and police officers, but so far the violence isn't comparable to the protests that lasted for weeks last year after similar labor changes. Protesters are also speaking out against planned budget cuts to subsidized student housing and reductions for government workers. Macron is standing firmly by the announced reforms, which are expected take hold later this month.
