Maine offshore wind bill vetoed by the governor due to opposition of labor agreement requirements
The governor of Maine, Janet Mills, has vetoed an offshore wind bill that she previously supported. The bill is focused on streamlining the process for ports to obtain permits to manufacture offshore wind turbines. The bill was receiving widespread support in the Maine legislature, but it began to receive opposition when labor agreement requirements were added to the bill. The labor agreement requirements state that port facilities have to engage in collective bargaining agreements with unions. Port facilities and unions would work together and negotiate to set employees’ wages and working conditions. Governor Mills opposed these requirements, stating that they reduce competition and could benefit out-of-state unions over Maine companies.
