Major unions in Virginia oppose proposed relocation of Washington Wizards and Washington Capitals
Two major sports teams in Washington D.C. are planning to relocate to Northern Virginia, but various unions have expressed opposition to the move. The two teams are the Washington Wizards in the National Basketball Association and the Washington Capitals in the National Hockey League. Both teams are seeking to relocate to Alexandria, and the relocation is estimated to generate $12 billion in revenue for the state. The unions representing hundreds of construction workers who would likely be working on the projects have expressed firm opposition to the relocation, stating that the real estate developers will not provide adequate job protections for workers. Workers are represented by the Northern Virginia- American Federation of Labor and Congress of Industrial Organizations as well as the Unite Here union.
