Malaysia Halts Intake of Foreign Workers After Protests
On Friday, Malaysia's Deputy Prime Minister Ahmad Zahid Hamidi announced that the country would no longer be recruiting foreign workers and it would take time to review its employment policies. This decision comes after millions of Malaysians participated in protests after a report was released that the country planned to hire 1.5 million workers from Bangladesh over the next three years. Malaysia had set a cap that only 15% of their labor force would be foreign, however now the country employs approximately 2.1 million foreign workers, which far exceeds that cap.
