Managed by Q’s ‘Good Jobs’ Gamble
Resisting typical low wages for cleaning industry employees, Managed by Q is a cleaning company that is paying $12.50 an hour as a starting salary, more than 40% above New York City’s minimum wage, while also offering full health care benefits, a 401(k) plan, and possible stock options. Good employees are selected not by their experience or education, but by two qualities their CEO deems most important: optimism and empathy. CEO Dan Tehran believes that short-terms gains earned by start-ups such as Uber that are at the expense of employee earnings will eventually hurt their bottom line. He believes that offering “good jobs” is the essential link to clients and profitability.
