Met Opera Extends Deadline Due to Financial Review; Negotiations Will Resume This Week
The New York Metropolitan Opera has extended its deadline for negotiations with its various labor unions to August 17th. The extension comes after a week-long independent review of the opera company's finances to determine its true financial health, as agreed to by the Met and the unions. If the sides cannot come to a new contract agreement by that date, the company's stage hands, technicians, musicians and chorus will be locked out. The Met is attempting to trim labor costs it claims are necessary for it to remain viable, while the union proposes limiting new productions, lower ticket prices and more streamlined operating costs as more efficient means of cutting expenditures.
