Metro union files suit
The Amalgamated Transit Union Local 689 has filed suit against Metro calling for strict enforcement of wage raises awarded by the company. In a contract settled last week, ATU members were awarded three consecutive annual raises of 3%. Nearly 8,000 workers are covered by the agreement. The suit has been filed in a Maryland court and asks for 'confirmation and enforcement' of the wage raises - Local 689 president Jackie Jeter says it is "sad" that the union must go to court for something so clear-cut. However, the transit agency alleges that the arbitration panel was negligent of its 'duty' to ensure that awards which exceeded company funds were not given out.
