Metrolink engineers union sues to block surveillance cameras in locomotives
The Brotherhood of Locomotive Engineers and Trainmen has filed a federal suit against the Metrolink train system for an 'invasion of privacy.' Metrolink installed an expensive and extensive surveillance system in locomotives after a crash in 2008 killed 25 people when an engineer was supposedly texting while working. Cell phone use is forbidden by Metrolink while operating trains. The union has called the surveillance systems an invasion of privacy, and say that the company could have taken less intrusive measures that would also have saved money given the tough times, such as installing cell phone jamming devices. The company says the cameras are an integral part of safety, and is 'disappointed in the union.'
