MICA adjunct faculty votes to form union
The adjunct faculty at the Maryland Institute College of Art have voted to join the SEIU. The vote was 163 in favor and 75 against making the adjuncts the first to unionize at a four-year college in Maryland. The adjunct faculty have expressed dissatisfaction at job security and paltry wages since at March. The college accepted the outcome of the vote and a spokesperson stated that the college was looking forward to working with the union to ensure that education and the experience of students was always the highest priority. Part of the reason for a lack of unions representing faculty members at Maryland colleges has been the piecemeal method with which the state has worked to extend collective bargaining rights to public employees.
