Michigan Teachers Can Quit Union at Any Time, Court Says
According to the Michigan State Court of Appeals, teachers and other school employees can leave the Michigan Education Association, the state's largest school union, at any time. Previously, union members could only quit during August of each year. The 3-0 decision follows the state's right-to-work law, which states that employees cannot be forced to pay union dues as a term of employment. The union argued that the resignation rule was beyond the scope of the Michigan Employment Relations Commission. The court ultimately disagreed, citing that it clashed with the state's right-to-work laws.
